Sara Ross Flanders Clark, 91, died peacefully in Wallingford, Connecticut, on November 23, 2012. Her loving family were with her before her death.
Born to Laurence Burdette Flanders and Harriet Secor Flanders on October 30, 1921, Sara grew up in a warm, close-knit family, with two older brothers, in Longmont, Colorado. She graduated from the University of Colorado with highest honors, majoring in mathematics, French, and English literature. On June 8, 1943, she married Paul Gordon Clark. After WWII Sara and Paul did graduate work in economics at Harvard, and in 1949 Paul joined the faculty of Williams College. Over the next thirty years their family alternated living in Williamstown with two-year periods in Italy, southern California, Uganda, Washington, D.C., Malaysia, and Egypt. Sara brought back to Williamstown a special love for Italy, and continued to "parlare Italiano" for many years with an Italian conversation group. At the Brookings Institute in Washington, D.C., Sara got her start as a computer programmer, a career she continued at the Williams College Computer Center until 1987.
Sara was a person of great warmth and intelligence, physically and intellectually active, adventurous, genuine, with a true zest for life. She shared a strong mutual love with her husband Paul and her four children, remained close to her two brothers and her extended family, and made deep and lasting friendships wherever she lived.
Sara read widely and took great interest in politics and sports. She was active in support of liberal and humanitarian causes, and volunteered with the League of Women Voters, Recordings for the Blind, Hospice, and an adult literacy program. Sara especially loved classical music and golf. She served on the Board of Directors of Taconic Golf Course for many years.
Predeceased by her husband Paul in 1991, she leaves her four children and their families: Deborah Clark and her husband Edward Berg, of King of Prussia, PA; Judy Clark Dale, her husband Larry Dale, and Sonja, Laura, and Nick, of Berkeley, CA; Eleanor Rice of Springfield, VT, and Stuart, Julia, and Emily; and Stephen Clark, his wife Carol, and Laurel and Ted, of Durham, CT.
A memorial celebration of Sara's life will be held at the Williams College Faculty Club from 1-4 pm on April 14, 2013. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Sara's memory may be made to the Fund for Williamstown, PO Box 400, Sheffield, MA 10257. Make checks payable to BTCF.
