Rita M. Swenson
1912 - 2012 NORTH ADAMS Rita Margaret (LaCoy) Swenson, 100, of 18 Willow St., North Adams, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at her home.
She was born in Easthampton on Nov. 12, 1912, daughter of Frank and Minnie (Barcomb) LaCoy. She attended schools in Easthampton and Northampton and graduated from Chicopee High School. Rita later lived in Monroe Bridge and moved to North Adams in 1943. During World War II, she worked at the Sprague Electric Co.
Rita was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church. She was a Persian cat breeder and won several awards in competitions. Rita became a judge and was the head judge and officer of the Cat Fanciers Association, serving as Regional Vice-President for over 25 years. During that time, she sold prize kittens to the royal family of Iraq. When she retired in 1980, Rita received the Association's Medal of Honor.
She was the widow of John Henry Swenson who died on Sept. 15, 2001. They were married in 1932.
Survivors include one son, Christopher J. Swenson of Seminary, MS; seven grandchildren, Christopher J. Swenson Jr., Jennifer Swenson, Josephine Swenson, Erica Swenson, Stephen Chipchase, John Chipchase, and Janet Chipchase, and nine great-grandchildren. She also leaves one sister, Jeannette Dillon of North Adams, and nieces and nephews.
Three sisters and three brothers are deceased, Marion Mokus, Dorothy LaCoy, Christine Pugliese and Donald, Francis and Robert LaCoy.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral for Rita Swenson will be Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at 11 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St. North Adams, MA. Burial will be at a later date in Southview Cemetery. A calling hour at the funeral home will be Wednesday morning from 10-11 a.m.
