Bruce, ZL1WB was a true Radio Amateur in every sense of the word.
He gained his amateur licence as a schoolboy and in the following years he encompassed every aspect of the hobby.
He operated all modes of transmission on all bands from VLF 181kHz, up to microwaves at 3.5gHz,with home brew and modified commercial equipment.
He pioneered amateur Radio Teletype transmission in NZ, using equipment assembled from pieces sent to him by his American amateur friends.
His exploits on 181kHz were renowned in both NZ and Australia, the signal radiated from his 3500 foot long wire aerial provided other amateurs with a reliable signal source.
Bruce was also an active member in public services such as Search and Rescue, Civil Defence, and the Amateur Radio Emergency Corps.
He had a deep interest in the historical aspects of radio transmission, preserving and donating equipment to the local museum.
An interest in photography led him into not only photographing Radio and Radar sites in Northland set up during World War2, but also developing the films.
Sadly, the Radio Amateur World has lost a valued member.

The photo shows Bruce fitting a lightning arrestor to his VLF 181kHz aerial.

So very sorry to learn of legendary Bruce becoming an SK. He was a most wonderful inspiration to me in the late 60s on RTTY. Always the perfect gentleman with never a critical word about anyone. As our native race say, 'a mighty totara has fallen', and will be sorely missed. With deep respect, ZL3TK
