PEQUANNOCK — Services were held for Thomas Joseph Gilheany, 85, of the Pompton Plains section of this community, who died on Friday, April 25, 2014.
Born in Troy, N.Y., Mr. Gilheany grew up in Stillwater, N.Y., and lived in New York City, Tokyo, Califon, Nutley, and Belleville before moving to Pompton Plains three years ago. He was a licensed registered architect and a professional planner. He served on the Belleville Planning Board and then on the Nutley Planning Board for 15 years, serving as chair for two years. Also, he was director of the board of New Jersey Planning Officials for about 20 years. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of the Honor Guard at Governor's Island. Ordained as a Catholic deacon by the Archdiocese of Newark in 1976, he served at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Nutley. He was incardinated in the Metuchen diocese as well, serving at St. John Neumann in Califon. And, he served as a chaplain's assistant in Tokyo, Japan, and served the Catholic community at Cedar Crest in Pequannock as well.
Services were Tuesday at All Saints on the Hudson Church, St. Peter's, Stillwater, N.Y., followed by burial at St. Peter's Cemetery, Stillwater. Arrangements were by the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home, Nutley.
Mr. Gilheany is survived by his wife, the former Rosary Scacciaferro; and his brothers, James and William.
He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Louise.
