Baker, Doris (Editorial) - Ridgewood
POINT PLEASANT BEACH - Doris Elizabeth Baker, 98, died on Dec. 5. She was born in New York City on April 22, 1916 to George H. and Frances E. Baker. Her family moved to Ridgewood in 1919. On Oct. 29, 1929, when the stock market crashed, Doris's mother opened Baker's Stationery Store on Godwin Avenue, where Doris helped out while she attended Ridgewood High School, graduating in 1933. Doris, like her father, loved to paint and was a founding member of the Ridgewood Art Association. Her interest led her to an opportunity to attend the National Academy of Art in New York City. When the United States became involved in World War II, she went to work in the Propeller Division of Curtis Wright Aeronautical in Clifton until the end of the war. Following the war, she joined the amateur theater group in Ridgewood, The Joe Jefferson Players, and was often stage manager in addition to constructing and painting much of the scenery. The family purchased a summer house and property two blocks from the ocean in Point Pleasant Beach in 1942, and spent the summers there until 1971, when Doris and her mother moved there permanently. They were charters members of the Point Pleasant Beach and Surf Club. Doris was a member of the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church and the Woman's Club for years. She was a member of the Manasquan River Yacht Club, serving two years as Fleet Captain of the women's Powder Puff group. "Aunt Dar," as she was known by her five nieces, taught them how to swim in the ocean, how to fish, how to crab for blue claws and how to seine for bait. She is survived by her nieces: Cally Kruger of McSherrystown, Pa., Judy Jones and her husband Russ of Fairfield, Calif., Georgia Livingston and her husband Jeff of York Springs, Pa., Ginny Bretzman and her husband Dave of York Springs, Pa., and Franne Cummings of Durango, Colo. as well as her eight grand-nieces and nephews and their children. She was predeceased by her sister, Ruth Frances Cummings. Arrangements are under the direction of Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan. A service is planned for the spring of 2015. Memorial donations may be made to St. Gregory's Pantry 804 Bay Avenue Point Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742 or the Point Pleasant Beach Library 710 McLean Avenue Point Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742.
