Gelberg, Alfred* - Teaneck
GELBERG Alfred (Fred), passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 31 surrounded by his loving family. He lived a full and bountiful 92 years. Fred was predeceased in January by his beloved and devoted wife, Dottie, of 63 years. He was the loving father of Janys Gelberg and her husband Alan Schwimmer, Loren Goff and her husband Lloyd, Nina Sobel and her husband Robert. Fred, known as Papa, adored his grandchildren, Aileen and Daniel Silbert and his wife Erin, Cheryl and Elliott Goff, and Matthew and Victoria Sobel. He was able to welcome his great grandson, Alfie Silbert into the world this past June. Fred leaves his dear sister, Lillian Horwitz and her husband Nathan and all of their children, as well as Dottie's brother, Mark Levin and his wife, Helene, who were like siblings to him from the beginning. He will be missed by their children and grandchildren as well. He was born in Poland in 1922 and ultimately came to Washington Heights in New York at the age of 15. While he moved many times for professional reasons, he eventually settled in Teaneck where Fred resided for the last 43 years. When he was just a teenager, Fred worked nights and went to school during the day in an effort to help support his family. Fred served his country as a Marine in WWII and spent several years in the Pacific under grueling conditions. He then completed his undergraduate degree in Engineering at CCNY, followed by his masters at Cornell University in Industrial and Labor Relations. As an Industrial Engineer and Consultant, Fred lent his expertise to a wide variety of companies. Later in life, he started one of the first computer software training companies and was an adjunct professor at Stevens Institute of Technology. Fred volunteered at SCORE, enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending time with his children and grandchildren, who adored and admired him beyond measure. Fred Gelberg was a man of great character with a morality that was unwavering. His love of family was central to his life and he has left us richer because of his love, kindness, calm and steady presence. We are blessed with a lifetime of spectacular and loving memories. Donations in Fred's memory can be made to The National Yiddish Book Center, 1021 West Street, Amherst, MA 01002, Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018 or Valley Hospice through The Valley Hospital Foundation, 223 N.
