ALONZO BRANDON SR.
Alonzo Brandon Sr., 88, of Montclair, died on Saturday, March 23.
Visitation is today, Thursday, March 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Union Baptist Church, 31 Conger St., Bloomfield. The funeral service will be held tomorrow, Friday, March 29, at 9:30 a.m. also in Union Baptist Church, Bloomfield. Entombment will be at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield.
Born and raised in Halifax County, Va., Mr. Brandon served his country as a member of the U.S. Army
, Quartermaster Corps, during World War II
. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He resided in Philadelphia, then relocated to Montclair and married in 1949. Mr. Brandon was employed by the Singer
Sewing Machine Co. of Elizabeth for more than 35 years, retiring in 1982.
As the patriarch of his family, Mr. Brandon instilled the ethics of hard work, justice and commitment to the community in his descendants, many of whom have chosen careers in community service. Because he loved to travel, he was sometimes called "Mr. Atlas." He was also an avid automobile enthusiast, never missing the antique car display at Montclair's Fourth of July parade.
Mr. Brandon is survived by his wife of 63 years, Naomi V. Brandon (née Booker); his children, Alonzo Jr. (Jacqueline), Roslyn Terry (Roger), Barry, and Craig (Deborah); 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
