Harold Alexander, age 90, formerly of Hackensack, NJ, died peacefully at home December 23, 2012.
Harold is survived by his wife of 63 years, Edith, two sons, John Eric and Stephen, and daughter, Linda Carol, grandson Eric Christopher, and great-grandson Osiris Moon.
Born December 6, 1922, in East Rutherford, Harold is the last surviving child of seven children born of Comer and Helen Nyman. He was honorably discharged from service in the US Army during and after World War II. Returning to civilian life, he worked with his brothers, Robert and Daniel in their house painting business before taking a career position with Public Service Electric & Gas Co. as a truck driver for line repairs. After retiring from PSE&G, Harold first worked as the sexton at the First Baptist Church on Anderson St. in Hackensack, and later, as a custodian at the Teaneck Public Library.
Harold was self-taught, a lover of books and had the "can-do" attitude that made almost anything possible. His talent in woodworking is on display throughout his house. Besides realistic duck decoys that be carved and painted, Dad enjoyed making furniture, working on the car and house, and was always repairing or improving or inventing something or other. Perhaps his crowning achievement was his having built almost entirely by himself, a beautiful sturdy little summer house in Preston Park, PA, that incorporated many recycled fixtures from our first home on Passaic St., Hackensack. The current owners of this house have praised Dad for his house building skill.
Dad's decision to relocate to Millville brought four generations of our family together to take care of each other. Harold's action has ensured that his beloved wife, "Edie", will be cared for by the family who loves her, so that she will never be alone.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Harold's Memorial Service, 12 Noon, Thursday, December 27, 2012, at the Barr Funeral Home, 2104 East Main Street in Millville. The family will accept visitors from 11 AM until 12 Noon. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.barrfunerahome.net
