PEQUANNOCK — Services were held for James "Big Jim" Joseph Chapman, 93, of the Pompton Plains section of this community, who died on Wednesday, June 19, 2013.
Born and raised in Jersey City, Mr. Chapman moved to Wyckoff in 1959 and lived there for 51 years before moving to Pompton Plains. A U.S. Army
Air Force veteran of World War II
, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the U.S. Air Medal, and the Silver Star. Also, he was an officer and reunion chair with the 394th Bomber Group. He was an agent with the Internal Revenue Service before retiring. He was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth's R.C. Church, Wyckoff, where he was a past member of the Parish Council. And, he was a member of Activities Unlimited and the Cedar Crest Garden Club.
Services were Monday at St. Elizabeth's R.C. Church, followed by interment at Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah. Donations may be sent to a

Mr. Chapman is survived by his wife, the former Muriel Messick; his daughters, Kathy Schal of Mahwah, Merri Duchak of Mahwah, Trish Benevento of Wyckoff, and Grace Ann Cupo of Chattanooga, Tenn.; his stepchildren, Leslie McPartland, Clifford Williams, and Thomas Williams; 20 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Mary Dineen; his daughter, Jane Donlan; and a grandson.
