James Loverdi

James Joseph, "Jim", 44, passed away suddenly on July 25, 2013 while vacationing in Florida. Jim was born on January 30, 1969 and was a lifelong resident of Little Falls. Jim honored his wife and was a devoted father, uncle and friend. Jim was an avid fisherman and sportsman and a lifelong fan of the NY Yankees and Miami Hurricanes. Jim was #15 on the baseball diamond and football field but he was #1 in our hearts. He began his distinguished athletic career at the local level as a Jr. Hornet for the LFAC and was a past recipient of the Lambert Award in football for outstanding sportsmanship. An accomplished athlete at Passaic Valley HS, Jim was a proud member of the 1987 state championship football team. He went on to play baseball at Ferrum College and Glassboro/Rowan University, where he fulfilled his calling by earning his degree in teaching. He was a member of the NJEA, Little Falls Athletic Club and Passaic County Coaches Association. Jim easily transitioned from the playing field to the coaching ranks. Known by all as "Coach Loverdi", Jim was a physical education teacher at Passaic County Technical Institute in Wayne for the past seventeen years. At PCTI, he was an assistant football coach and was the Head Baseball Coach. He mentored countless students both on and off the field. His guidance and leadership will be sorely missed in the communities he served. Evidencing his devotion to his players and dedication to teaching baseball, Jim was honored in 2012 and 2013 as Coach of the Year in the Big North Division. Jim spent hours hitting ground balls and pitching batting practice to anyone who asked for his help. He touched countless lives with his easy smile and words of encouragement. Wherever he went, he would meet someone he knew and would always make time to stop and talk. Although he was taken far too early, his family and friends are blessed with a lifetime of memories. Jim was a true gentleman in every sense of the word--a kind soul with a gentle heart. In death, Jim leaves a lasting legacy. He is survived by his childhood sweetheart, soul mate and wife Tamara, precious children Jessica Rosemary, Jamie Marie and Jake James, his cherished mother Charlotte, loving brother Michael and his partner, Jessica Wenton, sister-in-law Pamela Malia and her husband Edward, mother-in-law Juliann Riker and nieces and nephews Jenna, Kayla, Dominic, Anthony and Rayana. The funeral will take place on Thursday, 9:30 AM, from Gaita Memorial Home, 154 Newark Pompton Tpke., Little Falls. Burial Service 10 AM, St. John the Baptist R.O. Church, Little Falls. Interment Laurel Grove Cemetery, Totowa. The family will receive their friends Tuesday and Wednesday, 4 to 8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to The James J. Loverdi Children's Educational Fund, 57 Weaver St., Little Falls would be appreciated. www.gaita memorialhome.com
