Lucille Veronica Volckening, of Hillsdale, NJ and Cutchogue , NY died on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the age of 89.
Born December 5, 1924 in Brooklyn NY, the daughter of Henry and Lucille Volckening. Lucille graduated from Visitation Academy and Fontbonne Hall. She was president of her senior class at Georgian Court College and graduated in 1946. On that same day she converted to Roman Catholicism and was referenced by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen in his commencement address.
Married October 23, 1948 to William Joseph Schneider, they had eight children William Joseph (Arroyo Grande, CA) Frederick (Hillsborough, NJ) Lucille (Westwood, NJ) Gretel (Wellesley, MA) Melinda (Berkeley Heights, NJ) Henry (Basking Ridge, NJ) Heidi (Columbus, OH) Jennifer (Woodcliff Lake, NJ.); twenty-two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. After graduating from college she was the assistant to the photographer of the United Nations and photographed many of the first members to the UN. She was an owner, director and officer of Volckening Inc.
For 64 years she was a devoted and involved parishioner of St. John the Baptist Church including the Rosary Altar Society and served as chair of the Financial Committee. All her children attended St. John the Baptist School and for several years she was school mother. Fluent in Spanish, she was a lover of the arts, especially literature and the opera, as well as a dedicated reader of The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Lucille made it a priority to have her children travel and planned two cross country trips to explore the U.S. and Europe. With her husband Joe she traveled for business extensively to The Americas and the Caribbean. One of her greatest joys in life was spending time with her many grandchildren treating them to trips to New York City and Chinese dinners on Saturday night.
The family will receive their relatives and friends at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, 69 Valley Street, Hillsdale, NJ on Thursday, March 13, from 3-5 PM. The Funeral Mass celebrating Lucille's life and faith will follow the visitation beginning at 5 PM. Interment will take place on Friday, March 14 1:30 PM at Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY.
