Matthew J., 84, of Toms River passed away peacefully Saturday, January 5th after a short illness at Ocean Medical Center, Brick, NJ. He was born in West New York, NJ, and lived in North Bergen, NJ, before moving to Toms River 22 years ago.
Matthew proudly served his nation as a United States Navy
Sailor entering active service in 1946. Matthew served upon, U.S.S. Portsmouth, U.S.S. Fargo, Flag Admin. Unit, Norfolk, Virginia. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Matthew followed in his father's footsteps and became an expert Brick Layer, and entered membership into the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craft workers Union of Bergen County, NJ. Matthew distinguished himself in his trade, becoming Union Delegate and proudly fighting for his membership. Finishing his career at the Meadowlands Stadium, he retired in 1993 at age 62. As a young man, Matthew was a member of the Satan's Athletic Club, West New York, NJ circa 1940s.
He was a congregant of Our Lady of Libra, WNY, NJ, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society, and St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, Toms River, NJ.
Surviving are his wife, Florence Cerritelli, nee Lorenzo; his son, Matthew Cerritelli of Dumont; two daughters, Nina Halter and her husband Robert of Hackensack, and Cathy Bozicevic and her husband Boze of Howell; nine grandchildren: Thomas, Joseph, Wesley, and Emily Halter, Katelyn, Michael, and Mackenzie Bozicevic, and Corine and Matthew Cerritelli.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 8th, 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Hwy. 88, Brick. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday 9:30 AM at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 130 St. Maximilian Ln., Toms River, NJ 08753. Burial will follow at Madonna Cemetery Fort Lee.
