Nicholas, 88, of Clifton, formerly of Passaic, passed away on January 24, 2013.
Born August 21, 1924 in Passaic, Mr. Gangi was raised there and lived there for most of his life before moving to Clifton fourteen years ago.
Before his retirement, he had been employed with the United States Postal Service in Passaic as a Letter Carrier for thirty-eight years. In later years, he worked for fifteen years as a school crossing guard for the City of Passaic. Mr. Gangi served as a Naval Gunner, Seaman First Class, in the Armed Guard, United States Navy
in the Asiatic Theatre during World War II
. He received two Bronze Stars
, the American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, and the Victory Medal. During his service, he fought in several campaigns including Kwajalein and Saipan. He was a member of American Legion Post 200 and was a parishioner of St. Philip the Apostle R.C. Church in Clifton.
Mr. Gangi was predeceased by his parents, Giuseppe and Maria (nee Yuppa) Gangi from Sicily, by six brothers: Joseph (Pep), Frank, Rosario (Sam), Gaetano (Dane), Charles, Salvatore (Sal) Gangi and one sister Grace McEwin.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Dorothy (nee Thompson) Gangi, of Clifton; two sons: Thomas Gangi and his wife, Patricia, of West Milford and William Gangi and his wife, Michele, of Allendale; a twin brother William Gangi, of Clifton; and three grandchildren: Rebecca Marie, Nicholas William and Christopher Matthew.
Funeral services will be Monday 9:15 AM from the Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton and 10 AM at St. Philip the Apostle R.C. Church, 797 Valley Road, Clifton. Entombment to follow at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, Paterson. Visiting Sunday from 1-5 PM.
