Dorothy VanCourt Obituary

PEQUANNOCK — Services were held for Dorothy "Dot" Van Court, 101, of the Pompton Plains section of this community, who died on Tuesday, November 12, 2013.

Mrs. Van Court was raised in Glen Ridge and lived in Verona for 60 years before moving to Pompton Plains in 2002. She was secretary to the chief of the Verona Police Department for nearly 20 years before retiring in 1979. Also, she was active with the Girl Scouts, the Bruce Street School for the Deaf PTA and Deaf Club for Teenagers, the Ladies Auxiliaries of the Verona Rescue Squad and Fire Department, the Montclair Colony of New England Women, the Verona Service League, the Daughters of the American Revolution Eagle Rock Chapter, the West Essex Women's Club, the Montclair Women's Club, the Verona Historical Society, the Church of the Holy Spirit, and Cedar Crest Mountain Matters. She was a docent at the Crane House Museum. And, she was one of the founders of the Verona Community Pool.

Services were Sunday at the Cedar Crest Interfaith Chapel. Arrangements were by the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Cedar Crest Benevolent Fund or a charity of your choice.

Mrs. Van Court is survived by her daughters, Barbara Zurlo of Little Falls, Patricia McCormick of Lancaster, Pa., and Nancy Van Court of Rockaway; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert.
