Marie VanHouten Obituary

MARIE R. VAN HOUTEN

Marie R. Van Houten, 87, of Greenwich, Conn., formerly of Montclair, died on Monday, April 29.

Viewing will be this Sunday, May 5, from 2 to 5 p.m. in Knapp Funeral Home, 267 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich, Conn. A funeral Mass will be held this Monday, May 6, at 11:30 a.m. in St. Mary Parish, 178 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich, Conn. A private burial will take place the following day in Mount Calvary Cemetery, in Butler.

Born in Newark to the late Henry M. and Margaret Regan, Mrs. Van Houten graduated from Spring Garden School in Nutley, Our Lady of Good Counsel in Newark, and she received a B.A. degree in home economics from the College of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station in 1947.

After marrying, Mrs. Van Houten and her husband lived in Kinnelon and Montclair before moving to Greenwich, Conn. She taught home economics in Newark, and volunteered at The Nathanial Witherell for 25 years, and was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, flower arranging, caning chairs, babies, and family gatherings.

Mrs. Van Houten was predeceased by her daughter, Mary. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Leonard E. Van Houten; two children, Elizabeth M. Van Houten, and Peter J. Van Houten; and her sister, Jane R. Larkin.

Marie vanhouten was a name heard in my home for my 56 years. The girls from THE COLLEGE OF ST ELIZABETHS were my mothers sisters for life-maries sister jane regan larkin was blessed to have marie for a big sister. upper montclair memories came back when i read marie was with the angels. a skating pond and hot cocoa when i was 4 yrs old-52 years later-a warm memory of a beautiful soul. see you in heaven. have cocoa ready. love kathy burke

I was so sorry to read that Mrs. VanHouten had passed away. I met her many years ago and always remember her kindness and generosity. My sincere condolences to Mr. VanHouten and the kids.
