DUESS
Charles R., age 86, of Lodi, passed away on May 8, 2012. He was born and raised in Garfield. He proudly served in the US Army during World War II where he earned a Bronze Star. After marrying, Charles moved his family to Lodi in 1954. He graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University and went into the field of banking. As a banker, he spent his career at Spencer Savings Bank in Garfield beginning as a cashier in 1950 and retired as Chairman of the Board, President, and CEO in 1990. Throughout his career he served as Chairman of the New Jersey Savings League, President of the Bergen County Savings League, and he was a former board member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York. Charles was very active in his community and was a member and former president in of the Garfield Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, and a Walter D. Head Fellow, founder and chairperson of the Pancake Breakfast, and had perfect attendance for 50 years. He was a member and officer of the Garfield VFW, the Masonic Lodge, No. 67, Clifton Boys & Girls Club where he served on the Board of Directors, and many other organizations. He was honored by the Garfield Boys Club as "Man of the Year" in 1988, and he was a long time member of the Upper Montclair Country Club. He was an enthusiastic season ticket holder for the New York Giants and one of their biggest fans. Charles was the beloved husband of 64 years to Stella (nee Kuzenka). Loving father of Douglas and his wife Eileen, Stephen, and Christena Ciliento. He was the cherished grandfather of Karen and Clayton Arnott, Mathew Ciliento, Michael and Sheri Ciliento, Joseph Ciliento, Justin Ciliento, and Bryan and Erika Duess. Proud great-grandfather of Nicole and Logan Arnott, Amber Duess, and Gemma Ciliento. Dear brother of Richard Duess, Doris Nielsen and the late Eugenia Loechert. He will be greatly missed by his countless friends and additional family members. Charles will be remembered for his love and devotion to his family, his patriotism and the civic duties which he was involved. The viewing will be Thursday 6-9 PM and Friday 2-4 and 6-9 PM. The funeral is Saturday, May 12, 2012, arriving at the Aloia Funeral Home at 9 AM followed by a 10 AM chapel service. Entombment Garden of Memories, Paramus. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Special Olympics of Bergen County and the Garfield Rotary.
