AITKEN
Hugh, 88, of Oakland, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on December 24th. He is survived by his wife Laura, children Peter and Alexandra, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Born in New York City, he served in the Army Air Corps in Europe during WWII as a B-17 Navigator. After the war he attended the Juilliard School of Music. A composer and music educator his whole life, he taught at Juilliard and operated a private music studio for a number of years. He moved to the Music Department at William Paterson College where he taught and served in many roles, including Chairman, prior to retiring in 1996. His many original musical compositions spanned the range from solo and small ensemble pieces to full symphonies and operas; they have been performed worldwide by numerous noted performers and groups as well as appearing on several commercial recordings. A memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to Amnesty International. Arrangements by Cremation Society of New Jersey, cremationnj.com.
