Ignazio N. John "Papa Iggie," 91, of Elmwood Park passed away peacefully on May 1st at the Veterans Home in Paramus. Born of Sicilian immigrants, he was raised in Paterson before settling in Elmwood Park for the past 47 years.
He was a WWII veteran serving in the Army. He received numerous decorations including a Purple Heart. He served with the 417th infantry division attached to the 3rd Army Medical Corps as well as the 76th Regiment and Field Artillery Battalion under Eisenhower command. He was wounded at Battle of the Bulge and spend time in a French Hospital recovering from his life threating wounds. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #5084 in Elmwood Park.
After the service he worked at Allied Textiles Mills and Standard Dye and Finishing in Paterson. Then at Overbrook Essex County Hospital Center in Cedar Grove. He finished up his working life for the Borough of Elmwood Park Department of Public Works for 15 years, retiring in 1987.
Beloved father of Lucille Damiano, her partner Christopher Salmon, Nancy Marcin, Cathy Damiano, Cindy Mazanec, her husband Gary and Mark Damiano , devoted grandfather of Richard and Ethel De Block, Donald Koproski, Linda and Bill Phayne, Pamela Mazanec and Alyssa Mazanec, proud great grandfather of Richard, Jr., Bethany and Gianna De Block, dear brother of Paul, loving uncle of Albert Puget, his wife June and Philip Puget, his wife Joanie and family, Ronald Damiano, his wife Patricia and family and Georgette Finck, her husband Henry and family. He is predeceased by his devoted and deeply loved son in law Robert Marcin as well as his beloved aunt Kay and Uncle John Savgnani. He is also predeceased by and closest to his brother's and sister's Ann, Tillie, George , Emma and Philip.
Funeral service Monday 9:30 AM at the Patrick J. Conte Funeral Home, Inc., 274 Market Street, Elmwood Park. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Totowa. Visiting Sunday 2-5 PM. In lieu of flowers donation are requested for Disabled American Veterans.
