VAN TASSEL
Jane Patricia, a long time resident of Ridgewood, passed away on September 22nd. Born in Brooklyn Heights, NY, she became a resident of New Jersey when her parents, Thomas and Maryon Farley, moved to Allendale after spending vacations there with Jane, her brother Tom and sister Maryon. The family later moved to Ridgewood.
She attended St Lukes School in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ and then the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, NY. While majoring in English at The Mount Jane was offered an internship at Time Inc. in New York City. Upon graduation as the valedictorian of her class, she was hired as a full time reporter for the company and worked for Time, Sports Illustrated, Forbes and Life magazines during her professional tenure with Time Inc. A consummate professional with a long list of bylines and countless interviews with industry titans, Jane possessed the attributes of a true journalist one who developed stories based on scrupulous research and fact checking. She retired leaving her position as Head of the Business and Economy section of Time Magazine.
Jane was married to the Honorable Edward J. Van Tassel for almost 40 years. He predeceased her in 1994. Throughout their marriage, Jane was a constant source of support of Ed's professional, political and civic activities.
Jane was also an active volunteer and Board Member for a number of organizations in Ridgewood. She shared her time with the Women's Club of Ridgewood, The College Club of Ridgewood, The Valley Hospital Auxiliary, and The Rosary Altar Society. Her faith was nourished as a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. She also enjoyed being a member of The Ridgewood Country Club serving as a committee chairperson and spending wonderful times with family and friends at the club. Her family is blessed to have had her in their lives and grateful for the strong values she shared with them.
She was the loving wife of the late Honorable Edward J. Van Tassel, beloved mother of four children, Edward who predeceased her, Maryon Van Tassel-Clark and her husband Bob of Ridgewood, Patricia Van Tassel-Cromie and her husband John of Allendale, and James Van Tassel and his wife Dana of Ridgewood. She had twelve adoring grandchildren Alex, Matthew, Christopher and Janie Clark, James, Katie, Christine and Megan Cromie, Katarina, Victoria and James Van Tassel and Edward's beloved son Schuyler Van Tassel. She was the dear sister of Tom Farley and his wife Carolyn of Upper Saddle River and Maryon and her husband John Maher of Livingston. Maryon recently predeceased her. Jane leaves behind eighteen nieces and nephews, cousins and friends who loved her dearly.
