Sister Jean Rosaire, OP (Rita M. Bedotto) of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, died on May 23, 2014 in Kaplan Hospice Residence, Newburgh, NY. She was 85 years of age.
The daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret O'Rourke Bedotto, she was born June 3, 1928 in Paterson, New Jersey. She was a graduate of St Mary's grade school and high school, Paterson, New Jersey.
Sister Jean Rosaire entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh on September 8, 1946, made her First Profession June 26, 1948, and Final Profession August 27, 1951. Sister Jean Rosaire holds a PhD in Educational Psychology from New York University, an MA from Fordham University and a BA from Villanova University. She is also a certified teacher of Tai Chi Chih.
Sister Jean Rosaire has been involved in education at all levels. She started out as an elementary teacher at Saint Patrick School in Woodbury, New Jersey, where she taught from 1948-57. She then moved to New York and taught at the Nativity School in the Bronx (1957-61) and at Saint Patrick School in Newburgh, where she was also principal (1961-64). From 1964-72, she worked at the Office of Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of New York, where she was reading consultant and language arts coordinator. In 1961 she began teaching summer sessions at Mount Saint Mary College and joined the faculty of the college as a full-time professor in education in 1972. During this time she chaired the division of education from 1974-1977; taught education courses; supervised student teachers; taught graduate courses and served as an academic advisor to hundreds of the college students. She was named Professor Emerita of Education in 2003 upon her retirement from the college. In 1998 S. Jean received the Mount Saint Mary College Faculty Award at commencement in honor of her outstanding service to the college and its students.
As a Tai Chih teacher she taught numerous adults through the programs at the Mount Saint Mary College Desmond Campus. She also trained other teachers for Tai Chi and taught the retired Dominican Sisters as well.
Sister Jean Rosaire is survived by her sister Margaret (Peggy) Haefeli of Paterson, NewJersey; Niece Rita Aboyoun and her husband Louis of Wayne, New Jersey; her nephew Edward Haefeli and his wife Lori of Springhill, FL; Grandniece Nicole Aboyoun and grandnephew Loius Aboyoun and Edward Haefeli.

Wednesday, May 28, 2014, in the chapel at the Dominican Center at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY.

Mass of Resurrection: 11:30 AM followed immediately by her burial in our Dominican Sisters Cemetery.
