John A., 91, of Forked River, NJ, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2013.
Born October 11, 1921, he was the son of the late Karl and Jane Manz of Saddle River NJ. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Koman) Manz for 61 years, residing in Forked River since 1985.
John graduated from St. Luke's High School in 1940 and served in the Air Force from 1942 to 1946. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Seton Hall and his Masters Degree from Montclair State.
Mr. Manz began his career in education as a sixth grade teacher with the Franklin Lakes school district in 1958.
He continued his commitment to education culminating as Superintendent of Schools where he served for 22 years, retiring in 1985.
John held the position of President of the Bergen County Superintendent's Association for a period of his tenure. His leisure activities included fishing and tennis.
Being one of twelve children, John valued his family and the times spent together. He is survived by his wife Betty, brother Rudy Manz of Waretown, N.J. and sister Carol King of Manahawkin, NJ. His children, John C. Manz of Bloomsburg, Pa., daughter Melinda J. Freid and husband Jay of Lower Macungie Pa., son Joseph M. Manz and wife Rose of Fishkill, NY. His grandchildren Christie Freid, Courtney Ojakavo and husband Rukky, Justin Freid and wife Sanny, Brent Freid, Christopher Manz and Katie Manz and his great grandchildren Ethan, Leah and Miles Ojakavo.
Visitation will be Saturday morning 9-10:30 AM at the Layton's Home For Funerals, Forked River. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 AM at the Church of Saint Pius X, Forked River. Burial will be Monday at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, please arrive at the funeral home Monday morning at 9 AM.
