John "Jack," of Port Charlotte, FL formerly of Saddle Brook, NJ passed away May 1, 2013 at the age of 65. He is survived by his wife Donna, his daughter Jacqueline Barat-Limnios (Gus), his daughter Jeanne Glynn (Kirt), and his son Joseph. He is also survived by his ten grandchildren Stephan, Justin, Mark, Sean, Daniel, Kasey, Anna, Derek, Kathleen, and Cecelia, his mother, Emily and his sister Jill D'Onofrio of Lodi, NJ. Jack was born and raised in northern New Jersey. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1966, and served for four years. He is a Viet Nam Veteran. He was appointed to the Bergen County Police Department in 1972 and graduated from Class 17 of the Bergen County Police Academy. Jack became a member of several of the Bergen County Police Department's specialty units, including Water Search and Recovery, Special Weapons and Tactics, Hostage Negotiations, Crime and Drug Interdiction, and the Medical Examiner's Investigation unit. Jack was promoted to Detective in 1977. In 1980 he was promoted to Sergeant and served as a patrol supervisor and lead investigator for the medical examiner's unit. In 1987 he was promoted to Lieutenant and served as the patrol commander. In 1992 he was promoted to Captain and shortly thereafter was promoted to Inspector and became Executive Officer of the Bergen County Police Department. On January 1, 1999, Jack was appointed by the Bergen County Executive to become the eighth Chief of the Bergen County Police Department. He retired in 2009 and moved permanently down to his favorite state: Florida. Chief Schmidig was a graduate of the FBI National Academy and also served as the Coordinator of the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management, and the Director of the Bergen County Office of Highway Safety. All are to gather at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 488 Saddle River Rd., Saddle Brook, NJ on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 10:30 AM for his funeral mass. Cremation will be private.
