John, Sr., 90, of Clifton, passed away on April 29, 2013. Born in Udol, Czechoslovakia on August 2, 1922, he came to the US in 1940 and lived in Passaic and Garfield before moving to Clifton in 1957. A parishioner of St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Cathedral, Passaic, John was an Army Veteran during WWII, serving in the Military Police. Towards the end of the war he was assigned to artillery at the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. After receiving an Honorable Discharge John returned to his birth place in Czechoslovakia, married, and had his first son, returning to the US in 1950. In 1952, his wife and son came to the US to be reunited as a family. He trained and worked as a Port Authority Police Officer in Newark for several years along with working at the Madison Millwork in Clifton, part time. He later took a job as Yard Foreman for Bakker Lumber Co. in Clifton for 35 years. He also worked as a Security Guard primarily at Nabisco in Fair Lawn before retiring. Beloved husband for 63 years of the late Elizabeth (Surgent) who passed away in March 2011. Devoted father of John, Jr. of Clifton, and Steve and his wife Kathy of West Bloomfield, MI. Loving grandfather of Steven Michael. Dear son of the late Michael and Helen (Kravcak). Cherished brother of Michael, Jr. and his wife Anna of Sussex, Steve and his wife Gudrun of Saddle Brook, Paul and his wife Ann of Clifton, Helen Manz and her husband Andrew of Clearwater, FL, and the late Nicholas. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Saturday 7:45 AM at the Shook Funeral Home, 639 Van Houten Ave., Clifton, and 9 AM at St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Cathedral, Passaic. Interment, St. Michael's Cemetery, South Hackensack. Visiting Thursday and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the funeral home, with Parastas Thursday at 2:30 PM.
