Malamo, 83, of Vero Beach, FL and Catskill, NY, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, aunt and sister, on October 17, in Vero Beach.
Malamo was born in New York City on February 5, 1930 to Panayioti and Effigenia Corniotes, immigrants from the Greek island of Lemnos. A proud product of the New York City public school system, she graduated from Hunter College. She married Arthur Megalos in 1952 and together they raised five children, living in Hawthorne, NJ, Catskill, NY and Vero Beach, FL.
Malamo worked as a schoolteacher and a librarian and was very active in church activities and community affairs. An avid swimmer, reader, baker, Scrabble and game player, she loved conversation most of all and her final year following a stroke that left her without speech was difficult for her, her family and her many friends. She loved her prayer groups in Vero and in Catskill and the Monday Club in Catskill.
Malamo is survived by her husband Arthur, her daughter Dr. Jill Miller of Vero, sons, Bill of Venice, CA, Chris, of Hawthorne, NJ and Mark, of Cary, NC, her brother George Corniotes and seven grandchildren. She also leaves behind eleven beloved nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her son, Peter and her sister, Mary Itsines.
Mal was always an advocate for the underdog and taught that the only sin is to not use the talents and gifts that God bestowed upon you.
The viewing will be Friday, October 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Browning-Forshay Funeral Home in Hawthorne, NJ and the funeral service will be on Saturday, October 26 at 12:30 PM at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Wyckoff, NJ at 12:30.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Fisher House in Albany, NY or to the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.
