Michael, 89, of Fair Lawn, NJ went to his eternal rest on Friday, April 11, 2014 surrounded by his loved ones.
Born in Passaic, NJ on March 21, 1925 to the late Eva (Semeteowski) and Michael Popowich, Sr., he was the seventh of nine children. After Passaic High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served on Destroyer Escort U.S.S. Platt during World War II. During his service, he met and married Amelia (Bajek) on April 22, 1945. They resided in Garfield, NJ before moving to their permanent home in Fair Lawn.
Michael was employed at United Wool Tool and Dye Company before becoming a pipefitter with Hoffman La Roche for twenty-five years.
Throughout his adult life, Michael did various charity works including altar server at St. Anne's R.C. Church where he was a parishioner and delivering for Eva's Kitchen. Together, both Michael and Amelia were active members in several senior clubs.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-nine years, Amelia. He is also survived by two daughters, Regina Sawyer of Sparta, NJ and Carole Melidonian of San Diego, CA. He leaves seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
The family will receive relatives and friends Monday, April 14, 2014, 7-9 PM at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ, 201-797-3500. A funeral mass is planned for Tuesday, April 15, 2014, 10:30 AM at St. Anne R.C. Church, 15-05 St. Anne Street, Fair Lawn. Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.
