Robert Hewitt Obituary



HEWITT
Robert "Bob" W., 94 of Hillsdale passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Born on July 31, 1919, in Milford Connecticut at the family summer vacation home to the late William and Hortense (Baum), he grew up in Manhattan, NYC on 96th St. and then East 52nd St. He attended Townsend Harris High School and then graduated from Andover Academy Prep School in 1936. He matriculated at Dartmouth College and graduated in 1940 with a BA in English. He worked at Lord and Taylor until he was drafted into the US Army on April 8, 1942. He attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) and rose to the rank of Major working out in the Mid-west making crew assignments for bomber planes, including the planned Atomic bomb attacks on Japan. Upon being discharged in November, 1945, he worked in advertising. From 1952 until 1983 he worked in the family Bridal and Hosiery business with his mother. Married to his wife Louise Frances (Pallette) on November 29, 1958 they moved to Emerson in 1959 and then to his current home in Hillsdale in 1977. Louise passed away on May 1, 2005. He was predeceased by his older brother Allan who had a successful career in the entertainment field, including Radio and NYC stage as well as in California with Disney. He is survived by his cousin Joan Hewitt Epstein of Boca Raton, Florida. He was a trustee on the Hillsdale Library Board, a member of the Hillsdale Our Town Committee, a member of the Fifty-Plus club, a member of the General Leonard E. Wood American Legion Post 162 Hillsdale as well as an Honorary Member of the Hillsdale Volunteer Ambulance Service and the Hillsdale Volunteer Fire Department. Additionally he was a generous supporter of civic, humane and charitable organizations. A "Remembering Bob Hewitt" memorial program is planned for 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the Hillsdale Fire House. A light repast will be provided. Cremation: Cremation Society of New Jersey, Inc.
