Sally Anne Pilcer Obituary
Sally Anne Pilcercq of Oakland tended to the aches and scrapes of students and the dollars and cents of municipal government.

The retired Valley Middle School nurse and former councilwoman has died at 72.

The cause was breast cancer, said a daughter, Ruth Kokkinakis.

Mrs. cq divorced; family wants mrs. Pilcer was a ubiquitous and helping presence in Oakland a nurse and health teacher at the middle school from 1980 to 2006 and a Republican councilwoman from 1989 to 2001. She "deftly provided a bridge between our schools and our town," said school Superintendent Richard Heflich, a former middle school principal.

Employing her intensely local knowledge, Mrs. Pilcer organized toy and food drives for families in need. "At one point she was running a store in town where people could drop off toys," her daughter said.

A life member of the Oakland First Aid Squad, Mrs. Pilcer stopped going on emergency calls when she joined the Borough Council. She focused on meeting first responders' needs and served as fire commissioner.

"Sally Anne always advocated for the Fire Department and worked to attain the equipment and anything else to help the volunteer firemen do their job," former Mayor Elaine Rowin cq said.

Rowin, also a nurse, saw a correlation between Mrs. Pilcer's profession and her approach to government service.

"Nurses are considered compassionate and caring and it certainly didn't hurt that nursing is what Sally Anne did for a living," Rowin said. "I believe that was reflected in how she saw the electorate and her role in the community."

Mrs. Pilcer was long active in local GOP affairs and volunteered in the council, legislative and gubernatorial campaigns of the borough's most prominent political figure, W. Cary Edwards.

The Wyckoff native and Ramapo High School graduate received two master's degrees from Fairleigh Dickinson University, in education and public administration.

Mrs. Pilcer, who was twice divorced, died Nov. 2.
