Msgr. Thaddeus Gintzeng, 88, passed away on March 27, 2013. Born in Linging, Shandong, China in 1925, Thaddeus was the son of Anthony Lee and Catalina Ly.
He studied in the regional seminary in Shandong and was ordained on April 11, 1949, later studying in Spain before coming to the US in 1954 to study at Seton Hall University. While there, Fr. Lee was asked by Paterson's bishop to take responsibility of a mission for Hispanic immigrants in the community. He founded Our Lady of Fatima Church in Passaic, the first Spanish-language Catholic Church in the Diocese of Paterson. Msgr. Lee served there until 1979 when he was assigned to Holy Spirit Church in Pequannock, NJ. While at Holy Spirit Church Fr. Lee was given the title monsignor and remained at the church until his retirement on January 10, 1995.
Msgr. Lee is survived by his nephews, grandnephews and grandnieces.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 AM Tuesday, April 2 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Passaic. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. An additional hour of visitation will be held Tuesday from 9-10 AM at the church prior to the Mass.
