Velma J., 100, of Westwood, NJ, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2014. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, to Frederick and Emma Koop. Velma (or Val, as she was commonly known) worked as a secretary and a beautician before her marriage, after which time she devoted all her time and energy to being a loving wife and mother. Family and friends, sunshine and flowers, church and prayer, ice cream and New York Mets baseball were her joys. She loved life, and everyone she met loved her. Beloved wife of the late Louis Nietman; loving mother of Linda Nietman and Janice deHaven and her husband Glenn; cherished grandmother of Heather Peck and her husband Tim, and Andrew deHaven; great-grandmother of JJ and Allison; and beloved aunt of Rick and Arlene Heckendorn, David and Barbara Heckendorn, Diane and Frank Titus, and Fred and Sue Ellen Koop. The family will receive their relatives and friends at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, West-wood, NJ, on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. The Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 AM. Interment to follow at West-wood Cemetery, Westwood, NJ. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made in Val's name to Food for the Poor, P.O. Box 979005, Coconut Creek, FL 33097. For the past four years her family had been making donations to this organization in Val's name, and it truly made her happy that a needy child would be fed as a result of these donations.
