Robert W., 91, of Upper Saddle River, NJ and Sarasota, FL, previously of Pinehurst, NC passed away on 7/6/14. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Purdy Freeman in July 2009, whom he met while students at the University of Vermont. He leaves his sons Douglas Purdy Freeman of Scotchtown, NY and Peter Voorhis Freeman and wife Mary Lou of Upper Saddle River, NJ, a sister, Janet F. Feder of Sarasota, Fl along with three nieces and four nephews. A second sister Jean F. Maxfield passed away in 2007. Mr. Freeman, a C.L.U. retired as President, and owner of Thomas, Freeman, and Giglio Agency in Allendale, NJ. He had worked in the Insurance industry for 40 years prior to retirement. A Veteran of World War II, he served in India and later the Marianna Islands in the Central Pacific, as a member of the 20th Bomber Command in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was present in August 1945 when the B-29's took off to drop the Atom Bombs on Hiroshima, and Nagasaki, ending the war. He and his wife were active in the community of Upper Saddle River. They were members of the Old Stone Church and founders of the Upper Saddle River Republican Club. Mr. Freeman was also one of the two founders of the Upper Saddle River Little League. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, and Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church of Southern Pines, N.C. He was a painter of Military miniatures, many of which have been donated to the Upper Saddle River Historical Society, a lover of music and art, an avid Detroit Tigers, Detroit Redwings, and Washington Redskins fan, as well as a lover of cats and dogs. He will be interred in the family plot in Hackensack Cemetery next to his beloved wife. A memorial service is planned for September 27, 2014 at the Old Stone Church, 500 East Saddle River Rd, Upper Saddle River, NJ at 12 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Old Stone Church, Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church, The Upper Saddle River Historical Society, or your favored animal shelter.
