Adam S. (93), of Clifton, passed away on Sunday, July
27, after a long illness.
A Mass to celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday, August 13th at St. John Kanty Church, 49 Speer Ave., Clifton, NJ at 11 AM. Funeral arrangements handled by Shook Home Funeral Home, Clifton.
Adam was born in Passaic, NJ on May 8, 1921, the son of Casmir and Cecilia Tencza. He grew up in Passaic and moved to Pine Island, NY. Adam served in the United States Navy in World War II as Radio Operator and was honorably discharged at the end of his service commitment. He then returned to New Jersey and married Genevieve Nieradka.
Adam joined the Clifton Police Department in 1947 and rapidly rose through the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant and captain. During his tenure with the Clifton Police Department, he attended and graduated from the FBI Academy in Quanico, VA and received his Associate's Degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He served as Captain of the Detective Bureau until his retirement in 1975. After his retirement, he was recruited by Hoffman LaRoche Pharmaceuticals to head their security at the Nutley campus. He served as the manager of security for Hoffman LaRoche until 1985.
Adam was actively involved in the Holy Name Society in his church, serving as President for a period of time, and The Knights of Columbus. He was a founding member of the lectors at St. John Kanty Church. He was also an usher and proud committee member of the annual church picnics at St. John Kanty. He was a former President of the Pulaski Police and Fire Association. In addition, Adam served in a number of board positions for the Athenia Veterans Post. Following his retirement, Adam was an active member of the Roche Retiree Club and St. John Kanty Golden Circle. Throughout his life, he enjoyed golfing with family and friends as well as traveling with his wife.
Adam is survived by his daughter, Kathleen J. Robertson, of Lawrenceville, granddaughter Jennifer P. Byrnes and her husband Thomas, of Lawrenceville, his grandson, James Glenn Robertson of Clifton, and great-grandchildren Connor, Aidan and Mackenzie Byrnes of Lawrenceville, sister Louise Kraska, of Clifton, and nieces, nephews and friends.
Adam is preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve Nieradka.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given in his name to St. John Kanty Church, 49 Speer Avenue, Clifton, NJ. The family of Adam Tencza wishes to thank family and friends who provided him with support and love through his illness. www.ShookFH.com
