WEST MILFORD — Services will be held for James William Brawley, 89, of Westwood, who died on Friday, August 8, 2014. He was the father of Christopher of this township.
Born in Rockaway Beach, Queens, N.Y., Mr. Brawley moved to Manhattan, N.Y., in 1934 and then to Westwood in 1958. He was a bookkeeper and customer service representative for the General Cigar Company, Manhattan. In 1967, he took over the family business, a large service station in Hartsdale, N.Y. In his youth, he was a member of Ascension Church, and later was a parishioner of St. Andrew's R.C. Church, Westwood. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus, Cursillo, and Marriage Encounter, as well as a volunteer helping the poor. And, he was a veteran of the U.S. Maritime Service and the U.S. Army Transportation Corps.
Arrangements are by the Becker Funeral Home, Westwood. Burial will be at Westwood Cemetery. Donations may be sent to St. Andrew's Human Concerns, St. Andrew R.C. Church, 124 Washington Ave., Westwood, NJ 07675.
Mr. Brawley also is survived by his other sons, Robert of Emerson, Stephen of River Vale, Thomas of Westwood, and Matthew of Pearl River; his daughters, Pamela Trottier of Williamstown, Vt., Frances Lononsky of Andover, Catherine Brawley of Asheville, N.C., Ann Greve of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Veronica Burman of Rollsville, N.C., Loretta O'Meara of Fairfax, Va., and Mary Fuat of Colchester, N.Y.; his sister, Bernadette Powers of Branford, Conn.; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Evelyn McClain; his daughter, Jennifer; his son, Richard; his parents, James and Catherine; his sisters, Kathleen Brawley and Susan Neils McKusker; and his brother, William.
