O'BRIEN
Delores Smith, of Boynton Beach, FL, and formerly of Franklin Lakes, NJ, and Edwards, CO, passed away on July 11, 2012. Mrs. O'Brien was born in Spring Valley, IL to Henry and Margaret McDonald Smith. She married William H. O'Brien at Notre Dame Log Chapel in 1946. Mrs. O'Brien is a graduate of St. Clara Academy, Sinsinawa, WI, and the University of Illinois. She served in the US Navy WAVES as LT (JG) from 1943 to 1946 as Communications Officer. Mrs. O'Brien was active in many religious, civic, and social organizations. She was a Dame of Knights of Malta, president of the Rosary Society in both Haworth, NJ, and Franklin Lakes, NJ, president of Northern NJ Chapter of Project HOPE, volunteer at Holy Name Hospital, Teaneck, NJ, Bethesda Hospital, Boynton Beach, FL, and also a volunteer tutor for the "I Have a Dream Foundation." Mrs. O'Brien was awarded the American Legion Medal for Bravery for saving a child from drowning in Haworth, NJ. She was a member of the Delray Dunes Golf and Country Club in Boynton Beach, FL. Mrs. O'Brien is survived by her husband, William H. O'Brien, daughter, Maureen O'Brien of Arvada, CO, son, Richard O'Brien of Arvada, CO, sister, Marian Smith Stutz of Dallas, TX, cousin, Marmee Beyer of Crystal Lake, IL. She was predeceased by her brother, Don P. Smith, who was a roommate of her husband. Friends may call on Monday, July 16, 2012 from 7-9 PM at the Lorne and Sons Funeral Home, 745 NE 6th Avenue (North Federal Hwy), Delray Beach. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at 11 AM at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church, 840 George Bush Blvd., Delray Beach. Burial with military honors will follow at South Florida National Cemetery, Lake Worth. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the O'Brien-Smith Leadership Program in the College of Business at the University of Notre Dame, Development Office, Notre Dame, IN 46556, c/o William Doyle.
