Norma Lessor, age 94, long-time resident of Ridgewood, NJ, died October 25th at Villa Marie Claire, Saddle River, NJ.
Born July 3, 1918, Norma was the wife of John Lauren Archibald; (Married May 19, 1956); the oldest daughter of the late Harold A. Lessor and Grace Conkey Lessor; sister of the late Mary Lessor Early of Sudbury, MA; sister of the late Ruth Lessor Ivey of Raleigh, NC; brother-in-law of the late William T. Archibald, of Middlebush, NJ, and Robert V. Archibald, and his wife Wilma, of North Palm Beach, FL, and Cedar Grove, NJ; stepson John L. Archibald, Jr., and his wife, Jaqueline, Ft Pierce, FL, step granddaughter, Rebecca A. Primeau, and her husband, John Primeau, Weston, FL, and survived by seven nieces and seven nephews, four grand nieces, four grand nephews, two great-grand nieces, and a great-grand nephew.
Norma was a graduate of the University of Vermont, Class 1939, where she majored in foreign languages, French, Latin, and Greek. She was awarded a scholarship to the Sorbonne University, in Paris, but due to the outbreak of World War II in Europe, she was unable to travel to Paris, September, 1939.
She taught in secondary schools in Vermont and Upper New York State, 1939-42. Shortly after the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack, she enlisted in the WACS (Women's Army Corps). Most of her service was at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, where she served as a First Sergeant. Upon discharge, using the G.I. Education Bill, she enrolled in Columbia University, where she earned a Master of Arts degree in French literature. Thereafter she served as a foreign language teacher of French, Spanish, and Latin, at the secondary level in the Ridgewood Schools for 15 years followed by 15 years in the River Dell Schools, retiring in 1976. Her last few years in River Dell, she served in the guidance department.
Since their retirement, the Archibald's were active in the home exchange programs, participating in over 70 house swaps in various parts of the world. Prior to their retirement, they were avid sailors, cruising northeast waters on their 31-foot wooden sloop, SIMPATICO DOS, during their summer vacations.
