Roland Charles, formerly of Franklin Lakes, NJ died at home in Keswick, VA on Nov. 26, 2012 after an extended illness. He was born on April 13, 1926 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Katherine Jean Gravenkemper. He is survived by; wife, Donna Lee Gravenkemper; son, Ted Gravenkemper and wife Kim; daughter, Janet Larkin; step sons, Todd Rudner and wife Hydie, Chris Rudner and fiancée Kathy; seven grandchildren, Kat, Conor, Hunter, Holly, Madison, Robbie, and Colt; three sisters, Esther Stowe, Sonny Wells, and Ria Aufdermarsh.
Roland served in the US Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict and rose to the level of 1st Lt. earning 3 Bronze Battle stars during duties in Japan and the Philippines. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a BBA and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He was a business executive for one company for over 40 years, withstanding many corporate reorganizations, rising to Senior Vice President of BASF Corp., Printing Ink Division. He also was President of Vulcan Corp. for a year and served on the board of directors. He has had residences in Indianapolis, IN; Cincinnati, Ohio; Oakville, Ontario;Franklin Lakes, NJ; Wilmington, NC; Lake George, NY; and Keswick, VA.
He was a lifelong bow hunter and fisherman, always catching larger animals and fish than his friends. He was a senior member of the Pope +Young Club and held records in Black Bear, Cougar, Mule Deer, and Pronghorn Antelope.
