George Dykstra Obituary

George I., 91, of Pompton Lakes, departed from this life on February 3, 2013.
Raised in Danforth, IL, George graduated from Hope College (Holland, MI), enlisted in the Navy and attended officers training at Columbia University in 1943. He served in World War II as lieutenant on a LST (Landing Ship Tank), commanding landings of supplies and troops during D-Day. His active service was completed in the Pacific Theatre.
George returned to Hope College in 1946 where he met his beloved wife, Anita. They were married in Pompton Lakes in 1949. He earned a Masters Degree in Education Administration at the University of Illinois in 1950. He taught science for eleven years in Springfield, Pequannock and Glen Rock schools. He was the principal at Wesley D. Tisdale School in Ramsey for 24 years and retired in 1984. He was an active member of Pompton Reformed Church for over 50 years.
Devoted husband to the late Anita Wells (1997). Loving father to Tom Dykstra (and wife Mary and children) of Rochester, MI and Jill Laux (and husband Jim) of Clifton, NJ. Adored grandfather of Jeffrey and Timothy Laux. Dear friend to Betty Artsma of Franklin Lakes. Twin brother of Gerald (wife Dorothy) of Primghar, IA. Preceded by siblings Francis Dykstra, Harold Dykstra and Carolyn Kohlman.
Funeral service 11 AM on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Pompton Reformed Church, Pompton Lakes with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation Friday 4-8 PM at Richards Funeral Home, 4 Newark Pompton Tpke, Riverdale, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Pompton Reformed Church, 59 Hamburg Tpke, Pompton Lakes, NJ would be appreciated.
