Christine Steck died on Feb. 11, after a period of Hospice Care at St. Barnabas Hospital. A Memorial Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, in Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect St., South Orange. All are welcome.

Mrs. Steck grew up in Newark, the daughter of Henry Sosnowski and Jean Stachnik Sosnowski, and the sister of Robert and Henry Sosnowski. She put herself through Rutgers University as an English major and attended graduate classes in literature at New York University. Her book collection included Wordsworth's poetry.

In 1978, she married Peter Steck at Kip's Castle in Verona and Montclair where they lived until moving to Maplewood in 1981 to start a family and a garden. The garden had many flowers including celebrations for her two daughters, Meredith and Kathryn. For more than 10 years, she worked as the director of public relations and special events for Hahne's Department Stores in New Jersey, and as assistant director of public relations and special events for Bloomingdale's.

Mrs. Steck volunteered at local schools, and she continued to be a tutor in the Maplewood-South Orange elementary schools long after her daughters had graduated. She also worked at the Reeves-Reed Arboretum in Summit.

When Mrs. Steck was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 2009, she never skipped a beat. She was always focused on moving forward, upward, and on to the next thing.

In lieu of cut flowers you are invited to tend your own gardens, or to donate to the dedicated volunteers at the Maplewood First Aid Squad at To receive a notice of a memorial service to be held in the spring, send your contact information to
