James P., of Mahwah, NJ passed away suddenly on February 7, 2013, in Vero Beach, Florida, at the age of 75 surrounded by family and friends. He was born on March 10, 1937, in New York, New York, to James T. and Bridget Cummins, and was raised in the Inwood section of Manhattan. He attended grade school at Good Shepherd School and was a member of Cardinal Hayes High School's graduating class of 1955. Jim enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Alaska. He then served in the New York City Police Department before joining the New York City Fire Department in 1963, where he served for 30 years until his retirement as a Captain in 1993. In 1961 Jim married Kay O'Connell and they settled in Mahwah, NJ, where they raised six children together. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Jim is survived by his wife, six children and spouses, including Laura Cummins, Jerry and his wife Sally Cummins, Chris and his wife Sherry Bishko, Kathy and her husband Rodger Van Allen, Nancy and her husband Robert Walsh, and Kevin and his wife Diane Cummins, 15 grandchildren, his sister Betty and her husband John Byrne and Jim's nieces and nephews. While the most important part of his life was his family, Jim had many life-long passions and interest. He was a conversationalist, an avid reader, golfer and sports fan, and an eager student of his Irish heritage. Jim was a parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Mahwah. He had a retirement rich in family and friends and split his time between his homes in Mahwah and Vero Beach, Florida. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 14 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home in Ramsey, NJ. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Mahwah, New Jersey on Friday, February 15 at 10 AM. Interment will immediately follow at Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah.
