Thomas Edward, age 90, was a life long resident of Paterson, NJ. Mr. Oliver departed this life on Friday, April 5, 2013. He was the first African-American Law Enforcement Officer to obtain the rank of Captain at the Passaic County Sheriff's Department. He was a World War II United States Army Veteran. He earned the Five Battle Star, the Bronze Star and the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal. He was a member of The First A.M.E. Zion Church of Paterson, NJ for over 70 years. There he was a member of the Steward Board, the Kitchen Cabinet and the Lay Council. He was a member of the N.A.A.C.P., the Integrity Lodge No. 51, F&M, (P.H.A.), Fidelity Chapter No. 16, O.E.S., (P.H.A.) He was predeceased by his wife Mary Louise (Harris) Oliver, parents: George Sr. and Lillian V. (Coleburn) Oliver, one brother and three sisters. He is survived by his son Craig Oliver, daughter: Wanda Oliver, one grandchild: Alessandra "Joi" Oliver, two godchildren: Penny and Marsha Copeland, devoted friend: Anna Veal, special niece: Lillian Cook, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, neighbors and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate his life on Friday, April 12th, 2013 12:00 noon at The First A.M.E. Zion Church 326 Ellison St., Paterson, NJ. Interment: Cedar Lawn Cemetery. The Viewing will be held on Thursday, April 11th from 6-8 PM at the church. Arrangements by: The Carnie P.
