Michael John, 53, of Somerset, the cherished husband for 30 years of Susan (nee Morrow) and beloved father of Sarah and Adam, passed away on June 1, 2013, surrounded by his family.
An avid and highly regarded roller hockey goalie, Mike was struck by a heart attack after playing in a game and suffered severe brain damage caused by lack of oxygen, from which he never recovered. Mike graduated from St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale and Trenton State College. He earned a masters degree in cyber security in 2012 from Utica College and worked as the director of information security at Phillips Van Heusen. Prior to PVH, Mike worked at Verizon and its predecessors for many years. Mike was passionate about everything he did, especially spending time with his family. His other interests were sports, music, reading, and he had a constant desire to learn. Mike was a long-time parishioner of St. Matthias Church in Somerset.
Mike grew up in Waldwick and was the son of Patricia and the late Elmer Braun, and the brother of Rick, Dave, and Jeff. He also is survived by a large extended family, all of whom will miss him dearly. The family would like to thank the many hockey buddies, friends, and current and former coworkers who visited and offered prayers and support over the last five months.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, June 6th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton St. Somerset. A funeral Mass will be offered at St. Matthias at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 7th.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to certain organizations would be appreciated.
