Concezio, The Petrella family wishes to announce the passing of our beloved father, Concezio Petrella after a long battle with cancer. An architect, he resided at 401 Grand Avenue in Leonia for 56 years. Concezio, born in 1921 in Pratola Peligna, Italy, was a hero to his family during the dark years of World War II, providing enough money through an ingenious formula for pesticide that earned enough to keep his mother and brothers alive.
A lover of learning, he was able to acquire an education during extremely dire conditions. In 1950 he and his brothers, having been denied entrance to the United States at Ellis Island, emigrated to Venezuela where they built a successful construction business. In 1953 he was able to enter the United States where by characteristically tireless work, he became an architect and worked in that field successfully for the rest of his life. He was an active member of the American Institute of Architects. In 1954 he married Gilda Liberata Zavarella; She died in 2006. He is survived by his four children, Eugene, Anna, Diana and Sophia, his brothers Aldo of Hartford, CT and Tony of Cedar Gove, NJ, and his eight grandchildren, to whom he was a loving Papa.
His wonderful spirit, love of life, devotion to hard work, passion for learning and love for his family will be cherished by all who knew him. A ceremony honoring him will be held at Saint John the Evangelist Church, 470 Broad Avenue, Leonia, NJ 07605, at 1 PM on Saturday, December 28th followed by a reception at the Leonia United Methodist Church, 396 Broad Ave, Leonia.
