Thomas Boyd, 54, of Ramsey, NJ, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2014.
Tom was born and raised in Ridgewood, NJ, graduating from Ridgewood High School in 1978 and going on to attend Nichols College in Duddley, MA. He was the President and CEO of La Favorite Industries in Paterson, NJ, and was a member of the National Federation of Independent Businesses.
Tom's family left a legacy in Mastin Hill, the most popular spot in town on a snowy day. Thousands of people who sledded there fondly remember an occasional dunking in the Ho-Ho-Kus brook at the bottom of the hill, followed by dry clothes and a hot chocolate. Students sled down the hill on cafeteria trays much to the dismay of the lunchroom ladies.
Tom married his best friend Leslie (nee Marvin) on October 2, 1993, and the couple made their home at beautiful Sunny Hill in Ramsey, NJ.
In July 1994, Tom suffered a spinal cord injury that rendered him a quadriplegic. From that time forward, Tom exhibited great courage and was an inspiration to everyone who had the pleasure to know him. He was the consummate gentleman, and he refused to be defined by his wheelchair. He spoke frequently to students about overcoming disabilities and counseled patients who suffered spinal cord injuries, sharing his positive attitude.
Tom was a man who possessed strong core values and deep convictions. He loved his country fiercely and was a proud American, having had the honor of meeting President George H. W. Bush in 1992. He thrived on spirited intellectual and political conversations with friends and family. He was mechanical genius who never met a machine he couldn't improve.
Tom and Leslie adopted their first rescue dog in 1995, an English pointer named Augie Doggie. Tom trained Augie to do many things, including opening the front door. Augie was his constant companion, accompanying him to work every day.
From greener pastures, Augie pointed Tom and Leslie to Dodger--his new best friend and an Augie lookalike. Dodger will miss Tom dearly.
Tom always had a smile, a hug or a firm handshake; he was a loyal friend and wonderful neighbor who was always willing to help anyone. We, who were blessed by his graciousness, will be telling stories about him for generations.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife Leslie of 20 years, brother George C. Mastin and sisters Clydie M. Eide and Nancy H. Mastin. He is predeceased by his parents, Theodore H. Mastin, Jr. and Clyde Campbell Mastin, his brother Theodore H. Mastin lll and his sister, Helen M. Brister "Pindy". Tom's cherished nieces, nephews, extended family, as well as his many dear and devoted friends, and his longtime aide, Miss Barbara, will miss him greatly.
Visitation will be on Saturday, February 1st from 5-8 PM, and Sunday, February 2nd from 12-4 PM at the C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home, 306 East Ridgewood Avenue, in Ridgewood.
