JACOBSON
Barbara Jacobson, a sociology professor at Lehman College who oversaw the school's curriculum for more than a decade, died Wednesday, April 9. She was 74 and lived in Leonia, NJ.
Ms. Jacobson was born July 29, 1939 in Galesburg, Il, the oldest of four children of Arthur and Elizabeth "Betty" Jacobson. She graduated from DePauw University in 1961 and received a masters in sociology of religion from Yale Divinity School in 1963.
Ms. Jacobson completed her Ph.D. in sociology from Northwestern University in 1970. After teaching at Yale University, she joined the faculty of the Department of Sociology of Lehman College of the City University of New York.
She was chair of the undergraduate curriculum committee for many years. Under her leadership that committee was responsible for two significant revisions of the core curriculum, the portion of the curriculum required of all students. It also reviewed and approved all departmental undergraduate curricular proposals.
Her core intellectual interests were in social inequality. In addition to her regular teaching duties, she was largely responsible for the creation of a women's studies curriculum and was a leader in online course development.
She was on the Lehman faculty from 1970 until her death.
Ms. Jacobson is survived by her husband, John Kendrick, two daughters, Sherri and Tania, and her sister, Ruth. Mr. Kendrick, retired from the faculty of Bucknell University in 2001, is president of the Leonia Public Library Board of Trustees , a former member of the Leonia Board of Education, and a Vice President of the Flat Rock Brook Board of Trustees. Their older daughter, Sherri, lives in Leonia and is the reference librarian at the Cliffside Park Free Public Library. Their younger daughter, Tania, lives in Brooklyn. She is a special education teacher at Rivendell School and is studying for a masters' degree in music therapy at New York University. Ruth Jacobson is the librarian at the Cape May County Technical Schools.
Ms. Jacobson is predeceased by her brother, Irv Jacobson.
A memorial celebration was held Saturday, April 12 at Flat Rock Brook Park Nature Center in Englewood, N.J. A Lehman College campus memorial service is scheduled for April 28th.
