Edward George Massey(1919 - 2014)

Edward George Massey Apr. 29, 1919 - Apr. 12, 2014 MOOSUP - Edward George Massey of Moosup, died at the Villa Maria Nursing Center in Plainfield at the age of 94. He was surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Rita (Tavernier) Massey. He was born in Ballouville, Connecticut, the son of the late George A. Massey and Mary (Peloquin) Massey. Ed served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman Second Class during World War Two. He joined the Navy two weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. During the war he was assigned to the Naval Air Station in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where his duties included enemy submarine reconnaissance. He worked at Pervel Industries in Plainfield for close to forty years, retiring in 1984. Ed and his wife Rita resided in Moosup for most of their lives and most recently resided with their son Robert in Voluntown before moving to the Villa Maria Nursing Home. He was a faithful member of All Hallows Catholic Church in Moosup and a member of the Moosup Knights of Columbus. He was also a life-long Boston Red Sox fan. Besides his wife he is survived by his three loving sons and their families: Michael and wife Petra from Anderson, South Carolina; Robert and wife Carol of Voluntown; and Donald and wife Debbie of Orlando, FL. Ed was also very proud of his five grandchildren: Susan Massey Jeglinski, Tim Massey, Steve Massey, Brett Massey and Drew Massey, as well as his eleven great-grandchildren: Caroline, Connor, Luke, Sarah, Josie, Eli, David, Brady, Joseph, Carsyn and Riley. He is pre-deceased by his sister, Celia Brooks. A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at All Hallows Church on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. Burial with full military honors will follow at All Hallows Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to All Hallows Church in Moosup.
