Erika Luise Goepner Died - April 27, 2013 Lisbon - Erika Luise Goepner, 89, of Lisbon passed away on April 27, 2013 at the Hospital for Special Care with her family by her side. She is now reunited with her beloved husband, Werner, who predeceased her in 1992. She was born in 1924 in Werdau, Germany, daughter of the late Willy and Magdalene Thilo. Those who loved her knew her to be a woman of great courage, deep faith, fearless determination, generosity and abiding kindness. Erika's grandson and great grandchildren were the joys of her heart. She was passionate about mountain hiking and made many excursions to Switzerland with her husband and other family members well into her 70s. She was a devoted member of the Newent Congregational Church in Lisbon where she especially enjoyed the fellowship of her church community and delighted in joining them in making items for the annual Arts and Crafts and the Gingerbread House fairs. She also enjoyed warm friendships at the Lisbon Senior Center and gained great satisfaction in making afghans for the homeless. She worked as a seamstress at John Meyer of Norwich and as a seamstress/supervisor at Apparel Manufacturing of Sterling, where she took extraordinary pride in making uniforms for the men and women of America's military. Erika was predeceased by her sister, Susanna Hempel, and her brother, Werner Thilo, both of Germany. She will be greatly missed by her son, Bernd Goepner of West Hartford; her grandson Col. Erik Goepner and his wife Nancy of Andrews Air Force Base; her step-granddaughters Erin Jorgenson of Arizona and Kelly Scanlon of California; and her great grandchildren Rachel, Joshua and Daniel. Family and friends may gather for a memorial service on Saturday May 18, 10:00AM at the Newent Congregational Church in Lisbon. Burial will follow at the Read-Herskell cemetery in Lisbon. In lieu of flowers, Erika may be remembered with contributions to the Newent Congregational Church, 12 South Burnham Highway, Lisbon, CT 06351.
