Richard J. Asal Sr.

Richard J. Asal, Sr. December 6, 1929 - December 19, 2013 Thompson - Richard "Dick" Joseph Asal, Sr. of Quaddick Town Farm Rd., Thompson, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Day Kimball Hospital on Thursday, December 19, 2013, after an illness. He was born the son of the late William & Henrietta (Burby) Asal of Plainfield on December 6, 1929. Richard attended Plainfield public schools. Richard served in the United States Marine Corps, receiving an honorable discharge in 1954. In 1955, Richard married Nancy Aileen Bell. Together they made their home in Thompson, raising ten children. In 1959, Richard received a business degree from Morse College in Hartford. He worked for many years as a postal carrier in Thompson, as a night watchman at Belding Mill in Putnam, and was an active member of the Thompson Hill Fire Department for over 50 years. Richard was also a member of American Legion Post 67, North Grosvenordale. He leaves his wife, Nancy, and their children Andre (Patricia) Asal of Anderson, SC., Richard Asal Jr. of Thompson, Debra Piper, Priscilla Asal, Cheryl Bisson, Carla (Fred) Kress of Lakewood, CO., Sandra Law, Kristine (Larry) Campos, Scott Asal of Jewett City, and Virginia Asal. Also surviving him are 24 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and two nieces and two nephews. In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his brothers William, Sr. and James, Sr., and granddaughter Rebekah Piper Herron. Memorial gatherings will be held from 2 P.M. to 5 P.M. on Saturday, December 21, 2013 and also at 7 P.M. on Monday December 23, 2013 at the Thompson Hill Fire Dept on Chase Rd, Thompson. Everyone who knew Richard is invited to come and share their memories. Donations in his memory made to the Thompson Hill Fire Department are welcome in lieu of flowers.
