Robert D. Bates December 25, 1931 - October 31, 2012 Bonita Springs, FL - Robert Duane "Bob" Bates, 80, of Bonita Springs, FL, died Wednesday, October 31, 2012. Formerly of Putnam, he had been a Bonita resident since 1995. He was born December 25, 1931 in Putnam, the son of Rose Blanche (née Le Fleur) and George Francis Bates Sr. Bob received his BA from Brown University in 1954 and his Masters of Education from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1974. He was a science teacher, longtime coach, and respected mentor at Putnam Middle School for 30 years. He was a lifetime member of the Putnam Lodge of Elks #574, a member of Quinnatisset Country Club, and played softball at the Citrus Park "Field of Dreams" for 19 years. Mr. Bates is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ruth Thomas (née Stilu) Bates; his beloved sons, Michael (Denise) Bates of Putnam, Marc "Skip" (Tori) Bates of Brooklyn and Alan (Janet) Bates of Putnam; his brother, William (Evelyn) Bates of Thompson; seven cherished grandchildren, Jody, Jason, Brittany, Ryan, Glenn, Alissa and Eric; eight great grandchildren; his former daughter-in-law, Erica Bates; and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held in Connecticut at a later date.
