Vincent Jewett Hoagland(1932 - 2014)

Vincent Jewett Hoagland Apr. 18, 1932 - Feb. 9, 2014 NORWICH - Vincent Jewett Hoagland, age 81, of Norwich passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, February 9, 2014. He was born in Norwich on April 18, 1932, the son of the late Elizabeth (Bill) Hoagland and Leonard P. Hoagland, Sr. Vincent attended Samuel Huntington School and graduated from Norwich Free Academy in the class of 1952. He also graduated from the Professional Sales Training School in Boston with honors in 1968. He is survived by a son, Michael Hoagland of Cheshire, two daughters, Susan and Gary Makowicki of Norwich and Mary Jane and Michael LeClair of Glastonbury and son-in-law Fran Houle of Lisbon. He leaves eleven grandchildren, Kevin and Jennifer Hoagland, Lindsay, Ryan and Steven Makowicki, Nicholas and Jonathan Houle, Sarah, Brittany and Amanda LeClair, and Lindsay Morales. He is survived by a sister, Natalie Willis of Westbrook. He is also survived by his long-time friend and companion Nancy Melnik of Norwich. He was predeceased by his former wife, Edwina (Doucette) Hoagland, a daughter, Karen Houle, a brother Leonard P. Hoagland, Jr and a sister Marie Montie. He was a salesman in the Southern New England area with Beech-Nut Baby Foods and for several years with a Boston food broker, calling on the supermarkets in Eastern Connecticut. He also worked over 25 years as a warehouse manager in Old Saybrook and Mystic. His salesmanship earned him many fine awards and he was elected twice as top salesman in New England for his Company. He played baseball in the Norwich City League and he was an outstanding basketball player in Norwich and New London City Leagues in the 1950's. All who knew him admired his positive attitude and great sense of humor. He was kept busy following the sports and academic achievements of his eleven grandchildren. The Labenski Funeral Home in Norwich is in charge of arrangements. Calling hours at the funeral home are from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 16, 2014. There will be a funeral Mass at 10 A.M. on Monday, February 17, 2014, at St. Patricks Cathedral Norwich. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
