Charles Snurkowski Obituary

Charles V. Snurkowski Nov 22, 1935-July 2, 2013 NORWICH - Charles V. Snurkowski, 77, was escorted by Mary to the arms of his Lord on July 2nd. He was born in Norwich on Nov 22, 1935 to the late Victor and Annella (Pietrowski) Snurkowski. He graduated from Hartford Technical School and worked for years at Vic's Barbershop which his dad owned as well as in the construction field for the Laborers Local #547 for 30 years. In his younger years he enjoyed playing softball and in the 50's owned his own boat, "San Miguel". He was an avid fisherman belonging to the Stonington Fisherman's Assoc., loved Cape Cod - Lord's Point and watching girls' basketball. Many will know him as the voice of "Grumpy Pants" or "G.P." as Stu Bryer would refer to him when he called the popular WICH radio talk show. While he may have come across as "grumpy" he was passionate about the quality of the surroundings at Howard T Brown Park and the marina in Norwich where he spent much of his time keeping true to his love of the water throughout his life. He was also a member of the P.L.A.V. in Norwich. Charles is survived by his sons; Michael and his wife Becki of Stonington, Charles of Ledyard, Thomas and his companion Tony DeValle of Norwich, his daughter; Lisa, 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and his former wife and best friend, Vivian Snurkowski. He was predeceased by his brother Robert and sister Harriet. A calling hour will be held on Tuesday from 5pm - 6pm at the Labenski Funeral Home, 107 Boswell Ave., Norwich, CT. A Memorial Service will be held at the funeral home beginning at 6pm. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. My condolences to Charlie's family at this very difficult time. Have find memories of coming over to the house and spending time by the pool in the summer time visiting my friend Tom, one of Charlie's sons. A jovial, funny man, who also always wanted to feed you and make sure you had plenty to eat when you came to visit. I know Charlie will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

To the Snurkowski Family - I was saddended and will miss hearing Mr GP on WICH. He showed such passion for the City of Norwich. The marina and the listening area will not be the same without his presence. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Grampy,I love you so much and just know I will miss you forever. You are one of my very best friends and helped to make me the man I am today. The years that we lived together were very special to me and I always tried to make you proud. I took your coffee cup home but don't worry I won't use it. If I can grow to be half the man you were, I know I will be successful in everything I do. Kim, Adriana, Anthony, and myself were so fortunate to have you around. I love you buddy and it's not goodbye but see you later. I ask you to not just look over the family but everyone else that you have touched. Rest easy Grampy. Love you always.

I grew up in Greeneville with Chuck and his brother, Bob..they were part of one of the solid Polish families in that area in the 40s and 50s (such a changed place today)...he was opionated but knowledgeable...the community could use more activist--and outspoken--citizens such as Chuck--a good Union guy, too,......

No one was more of an advocate for trying to improve the quality of the public's visit to the marina and Howard T. Brown Park in Norwich than "Mister Grumpy Pants". While he may have sounded gruff, his heart was always in the right place. His voice will be missed on Stu's show and the void he left will be felt my many. My prayers to Lisa, Michael, Charles, Thomas, Vivian, his grandkids, great-grandkids and all who will miss him.
