Arden L. Curtis May 4, 1936 - March 20, 2013 North Franklin - Arden L. Curtis, 76, died peacefully on Wednesday at Backus Hospital. She was born on May 4, 1936 in Worcester, MA to the late Harold and Medora (Wilson) Curtis. She graduated from UCONN and remained a women's basketball fan throughout her life. Arden was involved in the promotion of girls' sports for over 50 years. She was a physical education teacher for 32 years, 28 of which were spent at N.F.A. Arden originated the NFA Class Leaders Club program; and coached gymnastics, girls' track, and girls' cross country in the early 70's. She served on several CIAC committees. In 1967 she joined the Girls' Athletic Committee which was an advisory committee to the Principal's Organization. Arden initiated and assisted in the organization of several of the first state girls' tournaments. She was the high school consultant to the NAGWS from '72 - '75. Arden was inducted into the New Agenda - Northeast Hall of Fame in '72; the Norwich Sports Hall of Fame in '96; the CT Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in '93; and the CT Field Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011. She received the CT Assoc. of Secondary Schools aware for contribution to the expansion of girls' varsity programs. She is survived by her brother Neil and sister-in-law Judy of FL; a niece; Kate Curtis of MA; companion; Sarah Jane Shearer of CT; and all of her many students and faculty family at NFA.
